G8 Summit Gives 'Fresh Resolve' To Expand Japan's Nuclear Industry

11 Jul (NucNet): Japan's nuclear industry says it has a "fresh resolve"
to expand the use of nuclear energy following the G8 summit of leading
industrialised nations in Hokkaido which ended on 9 July 2008.
The Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) said yesterday the fact that participating countries "shared a recognition of the usefulness of nuclear power. is encouraging to the nuclear industry, which has been working hard in furtherance of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy".
JAIF said the summit endorsed the view of Japanese prime minister Yasuo Fukuda, who hosted the summit, that nuclear energy "is key to solving the problems of global warming".
JAIF added: "We, the nuclear industry, possess a fresh resolve to accomplish our mission of expanding the use of nuclear energy, for which expectations are high as a solution to global warming issues. placing top priority on securing safety, and obtaining understanding from people in local communities as well as nationally."
G8 countries include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the US. The EU also participates in the summit which takes place once a year. The next summit is scheduled for Italy in 2009.
