The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy
Committee have signed a memorandum of understanding paving the way for
an agreement on research into high-temperature gas cooled reactors
(HTRs).
The Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) said the memorandum was signed in Astana, Kazakhstan, on 9 June 2008.
JAIF said yesterday that Kazakhstan's plans for domestic nuclear generation include large 1,000-megawatt (MW) light-water reactors (LWRs) for use in the southern part of the country and medium LWRs in the 300-MW class for use in the western part.
The country also plans small co-generation reactors with an electric generating capacity in the 50-MW class for use in regional cities.
HTRs are favoured for the co-generation category said JAIF, adding that "hopes are high" for the application of Japanese HTR technology.
