13 Jun (NucNet): An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission
has visited Cernavoda nuclear power plant in Romania at the invitation
of operator Nuclearelectrica.
The mission, from 2-6 June 2008, was mainly aimed at assessing the way international radioprotection standards are applied at the two-unit plant.
The mission paid particular attention to the impact of tritium exposure on public, plant staff and the environment.
A Nuclearelectrica spokeswoman said the assessment highlighted the good work practices used at the plant. "The mission found out that the Cernavoda plant is ensuring a permanent monitoring of radioactive emissions in compliance with international practices and standards."
Nuclearelectrica said the mission concluded that the plant is operating under conditions of "maximum safety" for the public, environment and personnel. No deficiencies were found in the evaluated radioprotection programmes.
There are two 650-megawatt pressurised heavy water reactor units at Cernavoda with two more planned. Cernavoda-1 has been in commercial operation since 1996. Cernavoda-2 began commercial operation in October 2007.
