11 Jun (NucNet): The Halden Reactor Project in Norway marks 50 years of continuous operation today.
The project is jointly sponsored by 17 countries under the auspices of the OECD's Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and is administered by the Institute for Energy Technology. Halden is the NEA's longest-running and largest joint project with an annual budget of 15 million euro (23 million US dollars).
The NEA said today: "The unique capabilities of the Halden test reactor have been a major factor in the success of the project. The Halden reactor's unique core design, combined with advanced reactor test rigs, allows many experiments to be conducted simultaneously."
Halden's founding agreement was signed by seven countries in 1958 and has been revised and renewed every three years since. There are now 130 organisations from 17 countries taking part in the project.
