6 Jun (NucNet): The UK's National Skills Academies can help provide the
professionals needed to bring a planned new generation of nuclear power
plants online in the country, a senior government minister said
yesterday.
John Denham, the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, said Britain anticipated "a huge demand for skilled workers to build and deliver nuclear power stations".
"We know there are major skills shortages in finance, construction, science, engineering, and IT. We know there are better jobs to come, new skills are the key to getting them, and National Skills Academies are a key part of our plans for securing them," Mr Denham said.
Launched in 2006, the UK's network of academies includes nine skills academies for sectors such as construction, manufacturing and the nuclear industries. The government aims to have 12 such academies operational by the end of 2008.
