2 Jun (NucNet): Canada's Bruce Power has taken the next step forward in
its proposals for nuclear new build in the province of Ontario by
releasing an environmental assessment (EA) for public comment.
The EA follows more than 18 months of technical studies and Bruce Power said it marked an important milestone. However, the draft EA guidelines are still out for consultation by regulatory authorities.
The utility said the release of the documents also allowed it to work with the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, under an agreement signed earlier, to ensure that the considerations of the Aboriginal community are reflected in the EA.
Bruce Power filed a site licence application with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) in August 2006 for the construction of 4,000 megawatts of additional nuclear generating capacity at its plant in Ontario. In January 2007, the CNSC accepted Bruce Power's project description, which began the environmental assessment process.
At the time, the company said it expected the application to be subject to review and that the environmental assessment could take up to three years to complete.
