28 May (NucNet): The UK must be "more ambitious" in its plans for a new
generation of nuclear plants for the country, prime minister Gordon
Brown said today.
Mr Brown said it was clear that it is "not just a question of replacing" retiring UK reactor units. "We'll be more ambitious in our planning", he added.
The prime minister was speaking after talks in Scotland with representatives of 18 leading oil and gas industry companies amid concerns over rising fuel costs. Mr Brown said the country needed to achieve "a better balance between supply and demand".
In January 2008, the UK government gave the go-ahead for the possible construction of a new generation of nuclear power plants.
