28 May (NucNet): The nuclear reactor of a UK submarine, which struck
rocks in the northern Red Sea earlier this week, was completely
unaffected by the incident and there is no environmental impact, the
Ministry of Defence (MOD) said yesterday.
The Royal Navy submarine HMS Superb struck an underwater pinnacle on 26 May, but there were no casualties and the vessel remains watertight, safe on the surface and able to operate under its own power, the MOD said.
No other vessel was involved in the incident, which caused some damage to the submarine's main sonar, and an investigation is under way.
