Dear Clerk to the EAC,
I am responding to the Call for Evidence by the Select Committee on the
Economics of Renewable Energy, as an individual who has relevant
education and experience.
I hold a Diploma from Faraday House, am a Chartered Engineer, and a Fellow of the Institution
of Engineering and Technology.
Faraday House was a higher education college that specialised in electrical power engineering.
After leaving, I became a graduate trainee with the London Electricity Board, and went on to work in Eastern Electricity, and later South Eastern Electricity.
I had several posts, working on the design, construction, operation, maintenance, repair and management of distribution systems.
My last post was as engineering manager of north west Kent, Thameside from the Dartford Tunnel to Rainham, down to Swanley.
The area included interesting loads in industry, cement works, paper mills, refineries, commercial, industrial, and public undertakings, and domestic customers.
And the Ted Heath 3 hour blackouts.
I became interested in meteorology in the 4th form at grammar school, and was dragooned into lecturing the air cadets, including the 6th
form on that subject.
I was also a gliding instructor in the RAFVR for many years and, flying such slow and light aircraft, I learnt in hot blood how wind behaves at the altitudes where wind turbines are placed.
Over the last year or two I have made studies of wind speeds across the UK, and the impact upon wind generation.
My objection to renewables is simple – they won’t do the job without traditional generation.
If that is nuclear, renewables are not needed.
Yours sincerely,
W. J. Hyde
