26 May (NucNet): India's Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the
University Institute of Chemical Technology (UICT) in Mumbai have
signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the DAE-UICT Centre
for Chemical Engineering Education and Research.
The state-owned DAE said India has to harness all forms of renewable and non-renewable energy sources to increase its energy production.
The DAE said the centre is important because of the role of chemical engineering "in shaping the technologies for the nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear reactors, and many advanced energy conversion technologies".
According to the DAE, the country's planned energy mix is gradually shifting towards nuclear energy as "the major component in order to cut down carbon dioxide emissions and reduce global warming".
Under the memorandum of understanding, announced in March 2008, a new building will be built on the site of the existing UICT that will house teaching laboratories, lecture halls and a pilot-scale equipment testing facility.
