5 May (NucNet): The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has
created a new directorate of regulatory improvement and major projects
management to meet the challenges of projects such as nuclear reactor
design reviews, applications for new uranium mining operations and new
power reactors, as well as the ageing of existing facilities.
The CNSC said that among the directorate's responsibilities will be licensing new nuclear power plants and new uranium mines; harmonising internal CNSC initiatives to support regulatory operations and new build; and managing the operations planning process.
The creation of the new directorate separates current regulatory operations from incoming new construction projects. The CNSC said the change will enable the commission to continue its regulatory activities while also focusing expertise on projects involving new nuclear power reactors and new uranium mines.
