Dear sir
The statement last week by the government that the electricity companies can plan replacement nuclear plants has not caused the SNP to reverse its opposition in Scotland. This could be a mixed blessing. Electricity supply has been so secure in recent decades that we have been too complacent about it future. To demonstrate the risks, an example is required of the damage that can occur to a prosperous nation where electricity supplies become unreliable – pour encourager les autres.
Scotland appears to have volunteered to become this example, by rejecting reliable, secure sources such as coal and nuclear and to become reliant on renewable sources for at least 50% of its electricity.
It will be interesting so see if the politicians' or the electrical engineers' predictions of the consequences are proved correct.
Yours truly, Paul Spare
