6 Nov (NucNet): Russia and China have signed a framework agreement for
the construction of the third and fourth units at the Tianwan nuclear
power plant in China's eastern Jiangsu province, Russian nuclear vendor
Atomstroyexport has said.
Atomstroyexport said the agreement was signed during a meeting of the prime ministers of Russia and China in Moscow on 6 November 2007. The signatories were Atomstroyexport president Sergei Shmatko and Jiang Guoyuan, general manager of the Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation.
The two countries began to consider the possibility of continuing their cooperation after the successful commissioning of the first two units at Tianwan, both of which are VVER-1000 pressurised water reactor units built with Atomstroyexport as general contractor and supplier.
Tianwan-1 entered commercial operation in May 2007 and Tianwan-2 in August 2007.
The two-unit plant represents the largest nuclear energy cooperation project to date between Russia and China.
