31 Oct (NucNet): Toshiba Corporation of Japan is to construct a new
engineering building at its Isogo Nuclear Engineering Centre (IEC) in
Yokohama. The IEC is the core facility of the company's nuclear energy
business.
The Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) said construction will begin in February 2008 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2009, at a cost of about 85 billion US dollars (about 58 billion euro).
The number of staff at the IEC stands at about 2,000, but it is planned to increase this to more than 3,000.
The IEC carries out engineering work for light water reactors, fast breeder reactors, and fuel cycle technologies.
JAIF said the idea behind the new facility is to allow Toshiba to meet rising global demand for new nuclear power plants as well as to service existing plants.
JAIF said a number of engineers from US company Westinghouse will be based at the facility. Toshiba acquired Westinghouse from British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) in October 2006.
