15 Oct (NucNet): South Korea and the US will hold a bilateral nuclear
energy cooperation meeting this week to discuss future joint research
projects, the South Korean government has said.
The International Nuclear Energy Research Initiative Committee (I-NERI) gathering will be held in Daejeon tomorrow and attended by nuclear energy engineers and policymakers from the two sides, the Ministry of Science and Technology said.
Key cooperative projects to be discussed include research on new nuclear fuel cycles, fourth generation reactors and a worldwide effort to launch the nuclear hydrogen initiative.
In the past, Seoul and Washington used the committee meetings to further research sodium-cooled fast-reactor systems, and graphite moderated very-high-temperature reactors.
South Korea agreed to hold regular I-NERI talks in May 2001. The programme, initiated by the US Department of Energy, aims to improve nuclear energy security, boost efficiency and the economy of nuclear power, and prevent proliferation of technology that can be used to make weapons.
