15 Oct (NucNet): Russia's new nuclear energy company Atomenergoprom,
which will incorporate the country's leading civilian nuclear energy
companies into one state-owned organisation, will be established in the
first quarter of 2008, the head of the Federal Atomic Energy Agency
(Rosatom) has said.
Sergei Kiriyenko said the key task of the new corporation will be to consolidate all segments of the nuclear industry and to form a single management system for "effective control of the whole complex, including military and civil nuclear companies, research institutes and nuclear and radiation safety agencies".
He said this would act as a guarantee that the government will implement a single effective policy in the nuclear sphere.
On 11 October 2007, the State Duma, or lower house of parliament, approved the first reading of a bill to establish Atomenergoprom. The second reading of the bill is scheduled for November and in December it could be ratified by president Vladimir Putin.
In April 2007, Mr Putin signed a decree paving the way for Atomenergoprom's creation.
That decree said Atomenergoprom would be a full-cycle corporation engaged in activities ranging from uranium extraction, fuel production and electric power generation, to the construction of nuclear power plants both at home and abroad.
