As published in the Sunday Herald on 3 Dec 2006:
ROB Edwards's claim that 'the environment will never be completely
cleaned up' in the article headlined "Dounreay 'will pollute for
decades'" (News, November 26) is wrong; since radioactivity declines
with time, eventually the suspect particles will cease to emit any
radiation above normal levels. Even now, they must be far less
radioactive than they were when released.
In any case, this has nothing to do with nuclear power stations,
which have not contaminated the environment or harmed anyone in the UK
(Dounreay was a research establishment). It is disingenuous to argue
against new nuclear power on the grounds that Dounreay accidentally
released some radioactive particles that are not know to have harmed
anyone. Let's ban motor vehicles because they cause harm and death.
