Sir, It was predictable that opponents of nuclear power would seize on reports of (anticipated) cracks in the graphite moderator of British Energy's AGR reactors as evidence that nuclear energy is unsafe (your report, 6 July). However, it is surprising that they should, as a result, condemn all nuclear power, even a new generation of plant. The latter are most likely to be PWRs, in which water acts as both moderator and coolant. Consequently, the alleged problems with AGRs has no relevance to the safety of future reactors.
