Tor
Justad (Letters, 2 January) repeats the old myths about nuclear power.
He claims that it is not cheap, yet independent studies show it to be
one of the cheapest methods, especially when environmental costs are
included. He claims that it is not safe, yet other methods of
generating electricity have killed and injured more people. He claims
that it has produced millions of tonnes of radioactive waste, yet the
volume of vitrified high level waste produced each year in the UK would
fit into a black taxi. He claims that we have no idea how to deal with
this waste, yet the industry has had proposals for an underground
repository for decades. Finally, he claims that this waste is
'inextricably linked to the production of nuclear weapons', yet the
waste is not fissionable.
Yours etc.
