Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) has shut down another reactor for regular inspections, leaving just four of the country’s 54 reactor units in commercial operation.
The Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) said unit five at the seven-unit Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear plant stopped operating this morning morning.
The plant’s number six reactor – a 1,315 megawatt boiling water reactor – is now the only one providing power to the Tokyo metropolitan area. All seven units at the plant are BWRs.
All of Tepco’s nuclear units in Fukushima Prefecture are offline and mandatory safety checks will have to be made before they can resume operation, JAIF said.
In July 2011 JAIF warned that Japan’s economic growth could be jeopardised if nuclear units that are offline are not restarted soon.
