The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will send a mission to Japan to help the country in its planning to remediate areas around the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was hit by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
The mission, made up of 12 international and IAEA experts from several countries, will visit Japan between 7 and 15 October 2011. The IAEA said the team will be led by Juan Carlos Lentijo, general director for radiation protection at Spain's nuclear regulatory authority.
The team will visit several locations in Fukushima prefecture and hold meetings in Tokyo with Japanese officials. The team will review the country’s remediation strategies and share its findings with the international community, the IAEA said.
At the end of the mission a preliminary summary report will be provided to Japan and made public. A final report will follow.
