Jordan and South Korea have signed a 70 million US dollar (54 million euro) loan agreement to finance the kingdom's first nuclear research reactor.
A consortium comprising of the state-run Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute and Daewoo Engineering and Construction Company are expected to start building a five-megawatt Jordan Research and Training Reactor in November 2010 at the Jordan University for Science and Technology near the northern city of Irbid.
The consortium signed the initial contract to build the reactor in April 2010. The reactor, which will produce medical isotopes, will be based on South Korea’s 30-megawatt High-flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor (Hanaro).
Jordan is also planning to build its first commercial nuclear power reactor, with a decision on the reactor technology expected by the end of 2010.
