France’s Areva group is to design, supply and install a new production line for mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel rods at the Sellafield MOX plant in north-west England.
Areva said yesterday that it had signed a contract for the project with Sellafield Limited and would also provide associated inspection equipment.
The contract is part of a programme of engineering improvements being made to the Sellafield MOX plant following an agreement with Japanese utilities for the manufacture of further MOX fuel, Areva said.
Sellafield Limited, in West Cumbria, is the UK’s nuclear recycling centre. Areva is a partner in the Nuclear Management Partners consortium, which has been responsible for the operations of Sellafield since November 2008.
