France’s nuclear safety authority (Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire; ASN) says it will not support the export of reactors that do not meet the highest safety requirements.
In a policy statement issued yesterday, the authority’s five-man commission said one of ASN’s major concerns is harmonisation to “a higher level of safety and radiation protection worldwide”.
“We don’t want two kinds of safety and we continue to promote in Europe and internationally safety goals that take into account the lessons of Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and 9/11.
Faced with projects to export reactors that don't meet those safety goals, ASN will not hesitate to say that such reactors could not be built in France,” the commission wrote.
