An agreement has been signed that could pave the way for building a new nuclear power plant as part of a clean energy park project in Canada’s New Brunswick province.
The Areva group said yesterday that it had signed a letter of intent with provincial authorities and utility New Brunswick Power to develop the park near the existing Point Lepreau nuclear plant.
Areva said the site would feature a mid-sized generation III+ nuclear plant and renewable energy sources, all built by the Areva group. Electricity generated form the park would be used in the province and exported to the Canadian Maritime region and to the US state of New England.
Areva is developing two mid-sized generation III+ reactors: the 1,250-megawatt (MW) Kerena boiling water reactor and the 1,100 megawatt Atmea-1 pressurised water reactor design.
New Brunswick said in 2008 that an independent study on the feasibility of building and operating a second nuclear reactor unit in the province could help meet the energy needs of much of Canada’s east coast and displace the region’s heavy dependence on fossil fuels.
