South African minister for energy Dipuo Peters today told the International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC) in Cape Town that the nuclear sector needs young professionals to make nuclear energy more understandable and “de-mystify the use of nuclear technology”.
In a keynote speech to delegates Ms Peters said: “There can never be a successful nuclear programme expansion unless one addresses public concerns.”
She said the efforts of young nuclear professionals would be crucial to addressing public acceptance in South Africa, and to the future success of a new nuclear build programme in the country.
Ms Peters addressed participants from more than 50 countries on the opening day of IYNC 2010, the fifth such biennial conference for young nuclear professionals.
General co-chair Mosa Rasweswe said IYNC is an important element in building the sustainability of the nuclear industry through youth development.
“Africa, as a developing continent, can learn much from the world in terms of the application of nuclear technology” she said.
