SIR – According to your article, 82% of us want more wind farms (“Public belief in climate change dips in wake of scientific data storm”, June 11).
My belief in this figure is as wobbly as the wind, but for those who believe wind power in the UK will achieve anything, consider the following. If we removed every last soul of our 60 million people, and bulldozed the entire human edifice of industry, buildings and transport into the sea it would reduce global CO2 emission by less than 2% and would not measurably alter atmospheric CO2 content.
In the face of that fact, what earthly use is a small amount of electricity from wind power which must be backed at all times by an equivalent amount of conventional power generation? To say we must build wind farms to counter climate change is not just anti-science, it is anti-common sense.
