Nuclear energy is a “key contributor” to fighting climate change and the potential to triple nuclear generating capacity over the next 40 years is ambitious but achievable, according to a report published this week.
The ‘Nuclear Energy Technology Roadmap’, prepared by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), says almost one quarter of global electricity could be generated from nuclear power by 2050, making a major contribution to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
The roadmap finds that “nuclear power is a mature, low-carbon technology that is ready to expand rapidly over the coming decades”.
