Russia’s State Duma (parliament) has ratified a nuclear energy agreement with Australia that allows Australian uranium to be enriched in Russia and used in Russian nuclear reactors.
The agreement was initially signed in 2007 in Sydney. A previous agreement signed in 1990 specified that Australian uranium supplied to Russia could be enriched for use by third countries only.
The initial period of the agreement is 30 years although if there are no objections from either side it could remain in force indefinitely.
