Urenco USA said today it had been authorised to start commercial operations enriching uranium for use as nuclear fuel at its facility in the state of New Mexico.
The company said its facility in Eunice was given the go-ahead by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to start accepting operational delivery of uranium hexafluoride feed stock.
Over the next few weeks, the company will begin work on making the plant fully operational.
The Urenco USA facility (formerly the National Enrichment Facility) is the first to use Urenco's centrifuge technology in the US. The facility is owned by the European uranium enrichment company, Urenco, through its Louisiana Energy Services subsidiary.
