SNETP Document Lays Out ‘Vision’ For European Nuclear Deployment PDF Print E-mail
Written by NucNet
Monday, 07 June 2010
A new “vision” of nuclear energy’s role in Europe’s energy mix lists 10 key objectives to allow for the long-term operation of the existing nuclear fleet, to support the deployment of Generation III technology, and to prepare for the launch of Generation IV reactors.
The Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform’s (SNETP) Deployment Strategy says that to promote the construction of new reactors across Europe, efforts should be devoted to supporting “internationally harmonised” methods for licensing.

“A large reliance on the European standardisation systems should be encouraged,” the strategy document says.

It also says that to ensure the long-term sustainability of nuclear energy Generation IV fast neutron reactors should be available for deployment by 2040 or earlier.

The strategy document follows on from SNETP’s strategic research agenda, published in 2009, which details anticipated nuclear energy research topics until 2050.

The new document, released at last week’s European Nuclear Conference in Barcelona, Spain, also calls for improvements in nuclear fission R&D, with funding and research activities concentrated on the most critical issues.

SNETP was launched in 2007 and gathers more than 80 organisations including utilities, vendors, technology providers and safety organisations, from 20 European countries.

The Deployment Strategy document is on the SNETP website
