The French government has chosen two communities in eastern France for investigation as possible sites for the long-term storage of low-activity radioactive waste.
France’s national radioactive waste management agency Andra announced on 24 June 2009 the selection of Auxon and Pars-lès-Chavanges, both near Troyes in the Aube department. Both sites will be investigated for a subsurface repository targeted for operation in 2019.
Both sites were among about 40 communities whose mayors volunteered to host the facility. Andra said more than 3,000 communities had been contacted in June 2008 with information about hosting the facility.
