Progress Energy's four nuclear plants in the US states of North and South Carolina and Florida set a record for their combined electricity generation in 2008, the company said on 27 January.
The company’s five reactor units at four sites generated more than 35.1
terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity in 2008, surpassing the previous
record of 35 TWh of electricity set in 2003.
Progress Energy operates the two-unit Brunswick nuclear plant in North
Carolina and single reactor units at the Crystal River nuclear plant in
Florida, the Shearon Harris nuclear plant in North Carolina and the HB
Robinson nuclear plant in South Carolina.
The company recently submitted a licence-renewal application to the US
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), seeking a 20-year operating
extension for the Crystal River plant. The NRC has already approved
licence renewals for the company's other three nuclear plants. Details
are available on the company’s website.
