December 2008 has produced the most unequivocal evidence that constructing wind turbines for electricity generation is a totally futile gesture.
The collapse of the oil price has brought down the price of natural gas
and hence the cost of electricity, so that subsidies paid to wind
turbine operators will have to continue at a high level for many years,
as they would otherwise be totally uneconomic.
At the same time, a typical freezing anticyclone has been static over
the UK and most of Europe for two weeks so that the output from the
tens of thousands of turbines is only a few percent of their nominal
output, at a time when electricity demand is close to a maximum.
Without our massive conventional stations, there would be widespread
power cuts.
One must conclude that the government has no comprehension of
scientific reasoning, if it continues to support these white elephant
schemes in the face of such substantial evidence of their inadequacy.
