Up to our ears in debt but value for money still has no appeal

Well, now we know how much Chancellor George Osborne is committed to value for money in energy policy. Not much. True, in his autumn statement he halved subsidies for solar panels but only because their cost has come down substantially. He also brought in £250m energy cost relief for intensive energy users who are supposed to be a prime target for reducing carbon emissions, thereby complicating energy policy still further while usefully helping to retain heavy industry in the UK.

WANO Supports ‘Wide-Ranging’ New Commitments To Safety

‘No Danger To Public Or Environment’ From Oskarshamn Fire

A fire in the turbine of the Oskarshamn-2 nuclear reactor unit in Sweden has been extinguished by the plant’s onsite fire brigade with no danger to public or environment, operator OKG confirmed today.

Fukushima-Daiichi Units 1-3 Are ‘Close To Cold Shutdown’

More than 100,000 cubic metres of highly radioactive water that has leaked and been collected from reactor systems at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan has now been treated and units 1, 2 and 3 at the plant are close to cold shutdown, the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) said today.

Ministerial Meeting Told Of ‘Enormous’ Global Energy Challenge

The scale and breadth of the energy challenge facing the world is enormous with demand for energy forecast to grow by one third by 2035 and global investment of 40 trillion US dollars (USD) (28 trillion euro) needed in the same period, an International Energy Agency (IEA) ministerial meeting in Paris was told today.

Italian Company Joins UK Heavy Module Partnership

Ansaldo Nucleare, a member of the Italian technology group Finmeccanica, has signed a partnership agreement with UK-based Nuvia and Cammell Laird to design and build heavy modules and components for the UK’s multi-billion pound civil nuclear programme.
