A new generation of nuclear power stations is expected to be given the go-ahead as the government unveils the results of its energy review.
Industry secretary Alistair Darling is set to say the plants are economically viable, will help address global warming and ensure energy security.
Critics say nuclear power is dangerous and not the answer to climate change.
But the government says the review will also cover renewable sources of energy and cutting demand for power. |

Some at the G8 summit say the world must be given a wake-up call about the dangers of retreating back into protectionism
TODAY, when G8 finance ministers meet in St Petersburg, the speed, scope and scale of globalisation is at the top of the agenda.
Just as rising interest rates worldwide and widening interest rate
spreads create a more challenging economic environment, darker
protectionist and anti-globalisation forces are on the increase,
threatening world growth. |

GORDON BROWN backs more nuclear power stations in Britain in a move
today that makes it certain that the Government will soon approve the
commissioning of new plants.
Any hopes of anti-nuclear campaigners and many Labour MPs that a change
of prime minister might see a reversal of Labour’s pro-nuclear stance
will be extinguished by the Chancellor’s article in The Times today in
which he explicitly supports new stations. |
